Christians, Frattini retracts text EU that appoints them
Brussels, January 31 (TMNews)
- Foreign Minister Franco Frattini has asked for and received, in Brussels today, the withdrawal, the conclusions of EU Foreign Affairs Council, a text condemning the recent attacks on religious communities North Africa and the Middle East, but without explicitly mentioning Christians. "It 's a beautiful page - explained Frattini meeting with reporters in Brussels this evening - the Council today, after we found on a text shared by 15 countries' governments with the family of the EPP," in which we consider it essential to mention the theme, the existence and the word 'Christian community' , we ended up with a text that the Council did not contain the word 'Christian'. I proposed then - as the Italian minister - an amendment that recalled both the terrorist attacks against Christian communities that the community against the Shia of Karbala; but even this was not accepted . "Against the amendment, which was to be unanimously accepted, several countries have expressed "some, like Ireland and Spain, surprisingly, and others, like Portugal and Luxembourg, in a more obvious." This is enough to reject the amendment. "Then - he continued Frattini - I felt that the text was not credible and I asked for and received were withdrawn. Europe has once again demonstrated that secularism is exacerbated damaging to its credibility , "said the Italian Minister, reporting that, however, the High Representative for EU foreign policy, Catherine Ashton, has undertaken to propose a new text to the next Council of Foreign Affairs.
